This course has been designed to provide business with personnel who are skilled as Class D licensed drivers of LPSV’s (Large public service vehicles) and Driver CPC certification. (Driver certificate of professional competence).

The aim of the course is to provide the learners with the skills and related knowledge in the rules of the road, driving a LPSV, customer service, documentation, first aid, manual handling and fire safety, digital tachograph and technical standards and to develop their attitudes, personal effectiveness, and job seeking skills which will enable them to obtain employment driving LPSV’s. 

Both a full current class B AND a current provisional Class D Driving Licence are entry requirements for this course. 

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Junior Certificate standard or its equivalent
  • Aptitude: A good standard of written and spoken English is essential in order to successfully complete this course and the associated assessments. The ability to correctly interpret and respond to written English instruction is essential for both the assessment and tuition elements of this programme.   • Previous Experience: Class B Category Driving Experience Special Requirements Full current class B Driving Licence required. Provisional current class D Driving Licence required.

OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID - 5N1207 
1. Describe the role and responsibilities of the occupational first aider (OFA).

3. Demonstrate how to deal with Respiratory Emergencies. 
4. Demonstrate that they can act as a Cardiac First Responder using both CPR and AED. 
5. Demonstrate that they are able to deal with different types of injuries that may occur in the workplace. 
6. Demonstrate how to deal with altered levels of consciousness. 
7. Demonstrate how to deal with musculoskeletal injuries. 
8. Demonstrate how to deal with burns and scalds, chemicals, poisonings, electric shocks. 

DRIVING BUS - CATEGORY D LPSV’s 
1. Identify and operate all control devices on the Bus - LPSV 
2. Comply with EU regulations for tachographs relating to LPSV’s 
3. Read and interpret information from road maps 
4. Drive the vehicle in accordance with the standard set by the Department of Environment 

CPC – CATEGORY D LPSV’S 
1. Enhance and develop eco driving techniques for LPSV’s 
2. Minimise the risk in the operation of LPSV’s 
3. Identify the Health and Safety Issues that affect drivers and passengers in LPSV’s 
4. Identify the issues that enable the driver of LPSV’s provide excellent customer care and in particular knowledge of the EU driver hours regulations. 
5. Understand the forces that affect passengers in LPSV’s and the effect that harsh braking/acceleration/cornering can have on them. 
6. Appreciate the importance of the safety and comfort of passengers while embarking/disembarking and being transported in an LPSV. 

DIGITAL TACHOGRAPH FOR LPSV’S 
1. Understand the EU directive and regulations that govern the fitting/operation of the digital tachograph. 
2. Convert local time to universal time coordinated (UTC) 
3. Understand the procedure to be followed in the insertion of the driver’s card into the vehicle unit. 
4. Understand the operational principles and features of the digital tachograph vehicle unit. 
5. Understand how to interpret the digital tachograph driver’s card printout. 
6. Understand the procedures necessary that enable manual entries on to the driver’s card. 
7. Know how to download data from the vehicle unit and drivers card. 
8. Possess a detailed knowledge of the faults and events recorded on the digital tachograph vehicle unit and drivers card and have the ability to analyse same. 
9. Identify the digital tachograph company, workshop, control and drivers card. 

DOCUMENTATION FOR LPSV’S 
1. Knowledge of the regulations governing the licensing of LPSV’s 
2. Knowledge of the procedures to be followed in the application process for a road passenger transport operator’s licence/ community licence 
3. Knowledge of national/international road passenger transport operations 
4. Knowledge of PSV licensing under PSV regulations 1963 
5. Knowledge of route licensing under the road transport regulation act 2009 

TECHNICAL STANDARDS FOR LPSV’S 
1. Understand how to operate emergency exits in LPSV’s road traffic (construction, equipment and use of vehicles) regulations 1963 as amended. 
2. Understand EU directive 2001/85 
3. Identify the legal markings required on LPSV’s and explain what each one means. 
4. Knowledge of the equipment that you are legally required to carry to ensure the safety of all passengers.

Both a full current class B AND a current provisional Class D Driving Licence are entry requirements for this course. As part of this traineeship learners will be expected to complete 8 weeks of work experience. This is a compulsory part of this course and is vital to the learning outcomes.
