The aim of the Career Traineeship programme is to enable the learner to develop knowledge, skills and competence in the area of Engineering within a classroom and workplace environment, and to work independently under supervision in a range of key areas in the Engineering Sector.

This programme combines directed off-the-job training (classroom-based learning) and on-the-job training (work-based learning) delivered in a host company. It is designed to enable learners to achieve a City and Guilds Diploma in Mechanical Engineering a NVQ Level 2 (NFQ level 4). This course involves 20 weeks In-Centre training and 14 weeks work placement.

On successful completion of this course the learner will receive a City & Guilds Level 2 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Applicants seeking entry into the programme must have achieved a minimum of a NFQ level 3 Major Award (Junior Certificate) or its equivalent prior to entry to the programme. Alternatively applicants may have achieved relevant skills, knowledge and competences through work experience.
  • Aptitude: City & Guilds recommend that centres provide an induction programme so the learners fully understands the requirements of the qualifications, their responsibilities as a learner, and the responsibilities of the centre. An initial assessment of each candidate should be made before the start of their programme to identify: - if the candidate has any specific training needs - support and guidance they may need when working towards their qualifications - any units they have already completed, or credit they have accumulated which is relevant to the qualifications - the appropriate type and level of qualification.
  • Previous Experience: Some engineering knowledge and experience would be beneficial but not essential to gaining access to this programme.
